Strangest week in the history of the US stock market |
US stock indexes closed higher on Friday, April 11, as traders considered the latest developments in tariffs, capping off one of the most volatile weeks on Wall Street ever.
The S&P 500 rose 1.8%, the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.1%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained about 619 points, or 1.6%.
The S&P 500 fell 3.46% during Thursday's trading session, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1,014.79 points, or 2.5%. The Nasdaq closed down 4.31%.
The Trump administration has implemented a 10% global tariff rate, excluding China. A White House official confirmed last Thursday that goods imported from Beijing will be subject to a 145% tariff.
This week marked one of the most volatile periods ever on Wall Street. Major indexes fell on Thursday as traders turned risk-averse, as uncertainty over trade policy weighed on market sentiment, erasing a significant portion of the historic gains made on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day delay on some of the higher "reciprocal" tariffs.
