Trump Gives TikTok Additional Time to Operate in USA |
President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for Chinese company ByteDance to sell its TikTok operations in the United States or face a de facto ban in the country, the second time he has taken such action. Trump said on Truth Social that he would sign an executive order to grant TikTok an additional 75 days to operate in the United States.
Before Trump's decision, ByteDance faced an April 5 deadline to complete a "qualified divestment" of TikTok's US operations, as required by the national security law signed by former President Joe Biden in April 2024.
ByteDance's original deadline for selling TikTok was January 19, but Trump signed an executive order the day after taking office, giving the company an additional 75 days to conclude a deal.
Although the law would penalize internet service providers and app store owners like Apple and Google for hosting and offering TikTok services in the US, Trump's executive order instructed the Attorney General not to enforce it.
